The Love of Money and Coveting

When you look at the world today people loose their minds over the love that they have for money and through desire to have the things that others have (coveting), they commit all kinds of ungodly acts. Many times not even realizing the wickedness that they’re doing in the eyes of God.

God gave us warning from the very beginning not to do this and it’s one of the ten commandments that people are very familiar with.

Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

You see people killing someone else because of the car they drive, the jewelry they have on or the iphone that they have. These are all examples of coveting and most people are aware that doing these things are wrong.

But let’s talk about the more subtle things that people might not be aware of that they do, which is the act of coveting and having a love of money, which is sinful in the eyes of God.

Let’s take as an example, going to the mechanic shop. It is a well accepted fact that if you go to most of them to get your car checked out, they will tell you things that are not wrong with your car to get it fixed or over charge you for something that’s simple to fix and don’t require a lot of manual labor.

Doing this is wrong in the eyes of God and is an example of having a lust (love) for money. On top of it all, these things usually involves telling a lie(s) which is also another sin in the eyes of God, which the scriptures tells us not to do.

And by the way, lying is almost always associated with coveting.

Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another…

Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

People that are liars will not make it into heaven either.

Revelation 22:14 – 15 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. This is what a lot of people do when they’re coveting, they love to make a lie that will bring them more money.

There’s nothing wrong with having money but when we have a lust for it where it drives us to break God’s commandments, that’s where the problem comes in.

1 Timothy 6:10 – 11 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

This is a scripture that is widely misquoted-the first part. It did not say “money is the root of all evil” like people tend to quote, it says “the love of” and there’s a big difference. When people have a love for money they do any and everything to get it. So this could be, stabbing everybody in the back to climb the corporate ladder-which leads to you earning more money, to having sex with influential people in your organization to reach a certain financial level . Other examples could be, you’re using and abusing someone just to get their money. The preacher that’s telling lies every Sunday just to bring more money into the church for himself. Companies that price gouge-You typically see this when a natural disaster hits an area, the price of basic necessities such as water or gas goes through the roof.

These things are all done because of the “love of money” that a person has. The scriptures tells us that if we’re a follower of God, we are to flee these things.

There are so many examples of coveting and having a love of money that’s in the world that should we attempt to discuss all of them, this article would turn into a novel.

But people should get the general idea, which is to deal in an upright and honest way and seeing if our ways conforms to the scriptures.

Sometimes people do these things without even realizing that they’re being wicked in the eyes of God and that’s where God’s mercy comes in where he tells us that once we realize that we’re sinning, we should stop and DO IT NO MORE and not saying things like “the blood of Jesus got me covered.” It actually doesn’t.

Acts 17:30-31 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

When we’re satisfied with having just enough to sustain our lives, it’s to our benefit.

Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
