Self Examination

What is Self-Examination? Self-examination is taking a close, honest look at our lives, actions, and attitudes to see if they align with God’s Commandments. These same commandments encourage us to understand the importance of maintaining a pure heart and a faithful life. In Lamentations 3:40, we are reminded: “Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.” When we reflect on our ways, we can see areas where we may need correction.

Reasons Why Self-Examination Matters

  1. It keeps Us Aligned with God’s Will – 2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? This verse urges us to regularly check our faith and ensure we are walking in Christ. Self-examination keeps us focused on God’s will and reveals areas for growth.
  2. Self-Examination Purifies Our Hearts and Motives – Psalm 139:23-24  “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  By asking Him to reveal hidden sins, we allow His Spirit to purify us and lead us toward righteousness.
  3. Encourages Repentance and Renewal –  1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Self-examination helps us see where we need repentance. When we confess our sins, God graciously forgives and cleanses us, renewing our relationship with Him.
  4. Promotes Spiritual Growth – Galatians 6:4 “But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”  Reflecting on our lives helps us evaluate our spiritual growth. By recognizing our progress and areas of improvement, we can take steps to grow closer to God and deepen our faith. We should pray for guidance and reflect on scriptures about confessing and seeking forgiveness. Self-examination is a powerful tool that deepens our relationship with God and strengthens our spiritual walk. By regularly assessing our lives and seeking God’s guidance, we can experience His peace, forgiveness, and joy. May we each take time for self-examination, allowing God to work in our hearts and mold us into the image of Christ.
