New Netflix Drama Chronicles the Rise and Fall of Bishop Carlton Pearson

At one time the Bishop Carlton Pearson possessed wealth and fame undreamed of by most of his peers in the ecumenical community. But after receiving a revelation from God his ministry underwent a drastic change. No longer was Jesus Christ the “End All Be ALL” when it came to salvation; and salvation was no longer exclusive to those who repented in Christ. As outlined in Bishop Pearson’s so-called “Doctrine of Inclusion”, all mankind would receive the gift of eternal life in the kingdom of heaven regardless of sins or belief systems contrary to scripture. As a direct result, in 2004 Bishop Pearson was declared a heretic by the Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops. Pearson’s conversion and new doctrine is now the focus of a new Netflix drama entitled “Come Sunday”. In this fairly balanced movie we see Bishop Pearson portrayed as: sometimes totally sure of himself and at other times completely lost, sometimes selfless and other time completely self absorbed, sometimes heroic martyr and other times an unrepentant heretic. But ultimately Bishop Pearson’s fate does not rest with Netflix or even a council of Bishops. His true judgment will come from the very scriptures and God he has betrayed.

Carlton PearsonJeremiah 23:16 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say still unto them that despise me, The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.

The prophet Jeremiah warned the faithful that there would be false prophets who, like Bishop Pearson would speak the vision of their own heart and declare it to be the voice of God. The prophet Jeremiah goes on to say that this false doctrine, like Pearson’s “Doctrine of Inclusion” would declare peace and salvation to those who hate God and despise his commandments.

Galatians 1:6
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Pearson claims to have penned his Doctrine of Inclusion after hearing a personal revelation from God. But had he been attentive to scriptures he would have remembered the admonition of the Apostle Paul who instructed us to receive no other Gospel even if it be delivered by an Angel from Heaven!

Titus 3:10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; 11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Bishop Pearson’s own words and doctrine prove him to be a heretic and the enemy of God. But even more tragic are the many who have found comfort in his lie that they need no repentance and no Christ to see the Kingdom of God. It is our prayer that those who read this article would be encouraged to study the scriptures and the words of Christ who is Our Way, Our Truth and Our Life, without whom there is no salvation.
