Super Storm Sandy, A Shadow of Things to Come?

Hurricane Sandy was correctly categorized in the media as a Super Storm. With the death toll now well over 100 and more than 50 Billion dollars worth of damage in its wake. One CNN correspondent was quoted as saying “This is a Storm that is seen once in a Lifetime”. But with natural disasters occurring in increasing frequency and intensity it is very possible that this is just the tip of the iceberg. And although science will no doubt attribute this storm to global warming and the changing whims of nature, the Holy Bible warns us that the anger of the Lord is kindled against a wicked and perverse nation.

Nahum 1:2-3 “God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. 3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.”

Jeremiah 23:19-20 “Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.”

Psalms 83:15 “So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.”

The sheer power and force of Super Storm Sandy is proof that even previously untouched regions along the North East Coast such as New York City will no longer be spared. It is also a sobering reminder that our lives can be forever changed or brought to an end at the commandment of God. The scriptures also teach us that evil is not reserved for only the Greatest of Sinners but for all of us who transgress the commandments of God.

Luke 13:1-5
“There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish”

It is our prayer that the Lord will continue to have mercy on those devastated by this storm and that the chastening of the Lord will lead to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Acts 17:30 “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:”
