Ben Carson and the Truth about Slavery!

Dr. Ben Carson’s life reads like a fairy tale born of the Civil Rights movement. As an accomplished surgeon, politician, presidential candidate and current Secretary of Housing and Development, Dr. Carson is a model of Black pride, perseverance and triumph. The unfortunate truth is that for all of Dr. Carson’s medical and political genius, his knowledge of the Black Slave Holocaust is subpar at best. The now infamous speech where Dr. Carson refers to black slaves as immigrants has gone viral for good reason; And the backlash that Carson has received from the African American community at large is well deserved. In the days following Carson’s speech, many came forward offering a far more historically accurate account of American slavery to counter Carson’s overly benevolent slave narrative. As servants of Christ who are dedicated to addressing all issues through the lens of the scriptures, we will compare Dr. Carson’s comments to the biblical prophecies of slavery recorded in the Holy Bible.

BEN CARSON: That’s what America is about. A land of dreams and opportunity.

Deuteronomy 28:33  The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway:
34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 49 The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; 50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:

According to the Bible, the land of our enslavement was NOT a land of dreams and opportunity but instead a land of fiercely cruel enemies who would only oppress and crush those they captured.

BEN CARSON: There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships

Deuteronomy 28:68 And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.

The Holy Bible does not speak of immigrants on ships looking for a new life and better opportunities. It instead speaks of free men and women taken and sold as slaves by their enemies.

BEN CARSON: worked even longer, even harder, for less.

Deuteronomy 28:65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

The Holy Bible tells us that during slavery our forefathers had no ease and no rest. The only reward for their hard work was fear and sorrow.

BEN CARSON: But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

Deuteronomy 28:32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long; and there shall be no might in thine hand. 41 Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity.

The Holy Bible tells us that there was no hope of a better life for the children of the enslaved. They were often taken and sold, never to be seen again. This brutal slavery would continue for generations without end. The sad truth is that contrary to Dr. Carson’s rationale of a better life for the great grandchildren of those enslaved, the centuries of slavery would ensure that even the great grandchildren would be born into a life of slavery and misery.

Despite the bleak picture painted in the Holy Bible concerning the enslavement of our people, there is also an enduring message of hope and repentance that was passed on through the ages in the prayer of King Solomon.

1st Kings 8:46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near; 47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness; 48 And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name. 49 Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause, 50 And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them:
